What do we do with our campervan toilet waste?
Because of the thoughtless actions of many campers, including those using campervans, the dumping of human waste and garbage, often near our waterways, is becoming a national issue. Unless the proper disposal facilities are utilised, freedom camping may soon become illegal, and that would be a great pity. New Zealand’s Information asks that everyone please do the right thing. What do we do with our rubbish?
We urge that you be very careful with your rubbish. Bag it and carry it with you until you come across a legal place to dump it. Many service stations and all holiday parks have dumping facilities. The penalties for littering are severe and any infraction could very well ruin your holiday of a lifetime.
The New Zealand Litter Act of 1979 provides harsh penalties for littering and they apply nationwide. Littering on public or private land makes you liable for a fine of up to $5,000. If that litter constitutes a danger to others, through its ability to cause injury disease or infection (human waste is considered here) the individual littering faces imprisonment of up to one month or a $7,500 fine. So please, empty toilet waste at any of the designated dumping stations spread throughout the country as are facilities to dump garbage and other unwanted matter.
