Lilly is 20 mths old (not a GSD) and has just had her 1st litter of 3 living pups. She's decided that anywhere she chooses in or around the house will do for a toilet (urine and fecal)! This is not necessarily related to becoming a mum and did happend before pregnancy -but it's getting worse. She's been vet checked and vet reckons she's scent marking(?!)I've never had any problems with toilet training any of my dogs so I'm inclined to put it down to training issues but if anyone knows of any other possibilities - please let me know before Lilly's mum rehomes her!!!! BTW - the have 2 dogs (other than the puppies 2.5 wks) - 2nd dog is alos female and about 7mths old now (not v gd toilet habits either sometimes)

Sounds to me like she's keeping a close watch on the pups...

Sounds a tough one, only just got Jaydah into the habit of going outside.
Best of luck Lily

There could be issues going on that I don't know about as I have never had a bitch in whelp (there are quite enough unwanted dogs out there already - thank you!!) - however - I have had a heap of fosters thru my home that have either never been house dogs, or have become used to the pound routine, where if you gotta go - you just go.
I simply make sure that mine are taken outside regularly, and supervised!
Not just by opening the door and leaving them to their own devices - but by watching to see that they relieve themselves and they are praised when they do.
In the early stages, this means taking them out - whenever they get up from a 'rest/sleep time' - after they have eaten - and certainly every couple of hours during the day/eveining - last thing at night before bed - and yes with boots and raincoat on if necessary.
I expect, and get a few mistakes, but within a relatively short period of time, the desired result is apparent - but it takes time, patience and consistency.
And I NEVER chastise a dog that has soiled in the wrong place - it is my fault for getting the timing wrong!!! ( I may curse to myself - but never chastise!!)

I am inclined to agree with K9Loyal, she proberbly doesn't want to go too far away with the pups. When my bitch whelped even though she only had the one we had to make sure she went outside to go to the toilet otherwise she went close to the pup. All we did was make sure she went out often (as she stopped asking) and as soon as she went we let her staight back in again.

Best of luck and I hope everything works out.

Loz
