Hey Barnie - welcome to the group. It's not always this quiet - read back over some of the stories on the message board and you'll see it can get quite lively soemtimes. Who knows you might even be able to help with some of our lost dogs - Daisy and Saara for instance. They're all 'our' dogs in this family. Good to hear from you

I have a 4 month old German Shepherd cross who is just lovely, i would love to start obedience training so i can get her into agility and flyball later in life.
I had another GSD at the start of the year but he wasn't the right dog to suit the family (you may have heard of Baxter a.k.a Polo (brother of Marko, apparently he is quite big in the show ring.) If anyone has any info on how he is or what happened to him after he was adopted out as i was fond of him that would be great.

I was just wondering how do you stop a puppy from biting as my 4 month old occasionally bites which can get irritating.
Also Jaydah (my 4 month old) always licks my legs, is this a sign of affection or what?

THe bset think that I know of to stops doga biting is...

When they Jaydar goes to bite bit make a loud abrupt noise and AHAH!!! and turn your backor put her on the floor (if she sits on the furniture with you) keep doing that she should get the message and stop soon enough. A friend of a friend came to me with the same problem but they were smacking the dog which I find makes it worse or the dog becomes frightened of its owners .

But when I went to their home and showed them how a loud abrubt AHAH!! worked they were amazed as after three times the dog stopped biting and just sat to be stroked. I must add that they dog was not nasty inany way at all just very young and play full most probably like yours.

At 4 mths old Jaydah might be changing teeth so keep some puppy safe chew toys around and try to redirect the attention to the toys. And yes, the abrupt squeal will work. Litter mates would squeal when they're bitten by a sibling - that's how they learn what's acceptable and what's not (but don't raise the volume i.e. don't shout it's more the pitch).

The licking is a tough one - but I understand just how annyoing it is. It cld be stress or fear related, it could be a habit forming, it could be a number of things but watch your baby carefully and see if there's a pattern e.g. same time of day, before or after dinner etc. my 7 yrd old still does it and it drives me nuts but with her we've decided it's attention seeking and we simply move our leg or wrist so she can't reach. i once had a pup that liked to chew on me and i found that if i held her nose/muzzle firmly in my hand and made her look at me while i gave her a very firm NO, it didnt take very long at all for her to stop this behaviour.

Yes, the licking thing is just an attention thing in my case, i will be just watching tv or not paying attention to her then she starts to lick me.
Another thing how do you stop them chasing cats?

Hey Barnie welcome to the group . I am the human slave for a 13 year old GSD (Shelby) a 3 year old GSD (Zeke) and a 12 year old lab (Jaggy), I also have a cockatoo (Charlie) three lorikeets (Sam,MAcca and Bo ) a tank of tropical fish. Denise has helped me stop the licky-thing within days! Sprayed the back of my hands and my trousers/feet with bitter insect repellant!! Yik. Suddenly after 12 months of licking, she doesn't seem so keen to ... funny that. Combined with the ARRRCCHH for "don't do that" it's working well. We're newbies to the GSDRSQ clan too.
