Not only did he kill Officer Gage, he wounded his handler and shot another officer. I am pleased to see a sentence that is more that a slap on the wrist with a wet hanky.

A Christchurch gunman has been jailed for 14 years for the attempted murder of a police dog handler, wounding another officer and killing the police dog Gage.

Christopher Smith was sentenced on Friday, but the details were suppressed by the High Court until today.

He pleaded guilty to the charges in October.

Senior Constable Bruce Lamb was shot in the face and Constable Mitchel Alatalo was shot in the leg during the incident last July.

Smith also admitted to firearms, weapons and cannabis charges.
