Newsletter for The German Shepherd Rescue Trust. November 2011

Greetings Everyone
Well we’re on the downhill slide to Christmas now – it’s only 8 weeks away! How scary is that?!

The GSD Rescue Christmas party is Sunday 13 November that’s only 2 weeks away. For those of you who have not attended before event details are below; we hope to see as many of you there as possible, especially those families who have recently welcomed a new furry member to the family! Attendance is not restricted to GSD Rescue dog owners, our supporters are also very welcome. This is a great to meet you and thank you personally for your support throughout the year.

Where: New Zealand Kennel Club Grounds, Clevedon Rd, Ardmore
When: Sunday 13 November
Time: 11.00am

If you have children attending please bring a wrapped present with their name on it so Santa can give it to them. All dogs must be kept on lead at all times, no matter how well behaved or well socialised your dog is.

Dog Adoptions
We have several dogs in fostercare at present, a few soon to be ready for adoption. We have just taken in Adoption number 942 who will be heading down to Rangiora, Canterbury next week to a family who have been on our waiting list for some time so she won't be making the homes needed page.

Soon to go up are a 1 year old speyed female, a "wee" GSD - he is crossed with something that makes him look like a minature GSD, so cute and certainly deserves a chance. We also have two girls on hold at an animal shelter who we are hoping to take in shortly when space/home becomes available.

2012 Calendars
Calendars for 2012 are arriving next week and will be available for purchase ($30) from 1st November. Order forms can be found on the website (www.gsdrescue.org.nz) and account information for payment can be found on the ‘Donations’ page of our website.

Hot Dogs!
The last few days have warmed up considerably so it’s time to start thinking about your best friend’s needs in Summer. In addition to perhaps changing the time of day you walk/run your
dog – the coolest times of day are prior to 10.00am and after 8.00pm, maybe you need to ensure extra water bowls are placed around your property, check where the shadiest spot is in your garden and maybe move your dog’s shelter there; try to keep water in the shade so that it’s nice and cool for them to drink. Maybe consider adding a paddling pool!! GSDs either love water or hate it but if they get hot enough I reckon most dogs would be tempted to take a dip if there was a pool of cool water available to them.

Dogs don't sweat like we do – they sweat through their tongues and the pads of their feet so it makes sense to provide ways for them to keep their feet and tongues cool.

Don’t forget to check beach reports for sea slug warnings and be aware of the council time restrictions for dogs being allowed on beaches.

And DON’T FORGET your poo bags – there’s just no excuse!

Take care until next time.
