September Newsletter
Well today is the first day of September and the first day of Spring for some, including our furry friends, can mean months of torment from seasonal allergies – yes dogs can get hay fever. Keep a close watch on their eyes – Sharni has already been to the vet with very red, sore, mucky eyes from pollen irritation and take note of whether they’re sneezing or scratching or rubbing at their noses. Believe me hay fever is no fun!

We have been overwhelmed with dogs this month taking in 10 in just one week. And they just keep coming – just this week we were approached by one person who has four dogs for rehoming! Rescue numbers are now up to 861!

Adoptions
We’ve had to deal with two medical issues recently with dogs.
Case 1: Stella, a 3-year old female. Stella came to us extremely underweight so we had her vet check and blood tests showed a severe vitamin B12 deficiency. Thankfully following a good diagnosis, we’ve seen considerable weight gain in Stella in just one month (6kg) following B12 replacement injections and the extreme boisterousness that she showed at the time of coming into care has dramatically settled.
Case 2: A 20-month old neutered male was diagnosed with EPI. This dog is currently in care with a lovely foster family and he has seriously engrained himself into their hearts and home. We had a long discussion with his foster family and they are prepared to undertake full time care of this young boy. EPI dogs are not easy placements because of the expense of the treatment, without which he would have a very short future. The Trust will be covering the cost of his treatment. Thankfully Denise has a vast knowledge of this disease having dealt with it in Yani (thank you Yani for leading the way for so many others) and with her current dog Genie who has also has EPI but Genie, who is now 5 ½ years old, has responded well to treatment, unlike Yani.

The Boys (homes needed page)
Unfortunately due to a neuter site infection, Duke’s time in foster care has been extended because follow up surgery was required but this has been successful and it will not be too long before both boys are off to their forever home – together (YAY!).

We have several dogs needing homes at present but we will firstly refer to current adoption applications that we have on hand to see whether placement can be made with those who are waiting for their special friend (or friends). If compatible matches can’t be found we will then place those dogs on the homes needed page.

Donations
A big thank you goes to Brand Support who are donating 2 bags of SPCA brand food per month for our foster dogs; this is a tremendous help. Huge thanks to Simon Hardley and the team at Brand Support.

Pet Expo
The Pet Expo is not too far away now (18/19 September) so we hope to see some members gathering around stand 62 offering their support to GSD Rescue. Several rescue dogs will be present for you to meet and greet, GSD related items will be available for purchase at reasonable prices and our donation jar will be on hand.

Calendars
Photos are being collected and will be off to the printer by the beginning of next week. Thanks to those who continue to support our only means of fundraising by reordering calendars each year. Your support is greatly appreciated.
However, calendar sponsors are needed in order to keep overheads down on the price of calendar production. Month sponsorships has proved to be of great benefit in the last couple of years

Rates:
If you sponsor a month as a business your company logo will be included in the sponsorship details - $150.00 per month
A sole sponsor will receive recognition on the page.

Text only - $50.00 per name - accepting 3 names per page
e.g. Sponsored by the following

Liz will also have these on display and will be taking orders at Pet Expo

And today is September 1 which means Christmas isn’t far away – which means our GSD Christmas Party isn’t far away either! So go get your pen and calendar – no get a bright pink highlighter and mark the second Sunday November (14th)– NZKC grounds Clevedon Road, Ardmore – on your calendar right now. We very pleased and proud to say that DSS Animal Management are offering their sponsorship to us again this year - they were fabulous last year.

So there you go – in just 4 more weeks I’ll be telling you it’s October 1 – and then it’s all a big slide into the silly season from there in. Reckon we’ll top 900 dogs by Christmas??

Thanks Denise & Colleen for the mention in the newsletter. Looking forward to Pet Expo.
Some of the cards in the webshots album have been sold & I've been very slack with adding more, but I will get on to it.
