The Rowi Kiwi is a species exclusive to South Westland, and it is endangered - less than 500 exist in the wild.We have been priviliged here at Glacier Gateway to be involved in the breeding and release programme to ensure the survival of this fascinating heritage bird.
Eggs are removed from the wild, raised in safe conditions, young birds are placed on a predator free island and eventually rehomed in their native bush setting when they are able to fend off their predators - mainly stoats and possum.
Ask us about it when you are here, it is a subject we are passionate about and enjoy sharing with others!

Update on the Kiwi: A very successful 2008-9 season saw a record return of Rowi kiwi to the South Westland bush, a real triumph for the rescue team. Well done guys, proud to be a part of it!

Update On Kiwi Part 2: November 2009: Current successful relocation count of 133 Okarito Kiwi relocated back to the Okarito homelands...record numbers! View these little fellas with Okarito Kiwi Tours, 85% success rate of seeing kiwi live in the wild

Update 24 June 2010: Latest figures are 500 Rowi Kiwi successfully raised and living in the Okarito/Franz Josef area...what an achievement....come and see them!
