Just read this and wondered how long it would be for the first case to be in the media.

SPCA horrified at negelected dog
The SPCA is horrified at the state of a neglected dog found in Auckland on Christmas Eve.

Inspectors found the animal, which they are calling "Eve", at a property in Glen Innes, after a neighbour reported the dog had been shut underneath the house.

The owners are away for Christmas, but Inspector Todd Neal says the animal has obviously been without food for a long time. He says it is the worst case he has seen in nine years with the SPCA.

Todd Neal says Eve looked like a carcass, and could barely lift her own head to acknowledge him. He says she had apparently survived by eating her own faeces. She had such a sweet forgiving nature that she touched the hearts of SPCA staff.

General Manager David Lloyd-Barker said every effort will be made to locate the owners and prosecute them.

There's only one word that springs to mind here - but I'm sure they did have a mother somewhere! I knew Todd Neal when I was at the SPCA - how horrible for anyone to have to deal with this but at least Eve is still with us and now on a better path.

Why can't the owners be locked in a cell for four weeks without food and water...

We have had several dogs that have looked liked that. It is so heart breaking, our worse case was poor Max a few years ago, left in a paddock to die, tied to a rotten kennel but he could only get half in. His fur had gone and his skin was black and thickened and the rats and wild cats had taken bites out of him. We got him better and looking gorgeous over nearly a year of dedicated foster care and medical treatment. Just when all was welll with him outwardly he went into liver failure and passed away. Only last year Zac, who was so thin his hip bones had cut his skin. Tara was a walking skeleton, Masssey University had not seen a dog so thin in a long time. Thankfully a few weeks of food makes a huge difference.

I simply do not understand how a human being have the capacity to be so ever cruel to a highly social animal like a dog. Have they not been loved? Are they monsters, or simply have blackened hearts?

Like the Korean dog farming industry - how can they look at many dogs stuffed in small cages everyday without breaking their hearts or conscience?

I don't think people capable of such deplorable actions have consciences or hearts Philip! bet every one of us who reads this wants to bring Eve home right now and show her that we're not all the same!

OMG that is awful - there are some despicable people around. Hope Eve finds a fantastic home (while those previous owners crawl round under the house eating their own poo & see how they like it)
