Well done, Foxy! Your family are giving Grace the best Christmas present she has ever had!
In December 2004, I came across this website. Our 9-year-old GSD, Panzer, was dying of cancer. We were all set to pick up a GSD called Porsche one Saturday - meet Denise with him outside the dog grooming place in Albany. Porsche's owners had left him at the pound and Denise had bought him a stay of execution from Thursday to Monday. However, the owners picked him up that morning. Panzer was still actually with us and we had Chloe, our (10-yr-old) Boxer, so we focussed on making Panzer's last days with us as comfortable and painfree as possible. He died peacefully at home the morning we were going to take him to the Vet to help him on his way. A week later, we adopted Jack, an 8-11 year-old Boxer, through Boxer Rescue. Jack had been with Diane from Boxer Rescue for six months - picked up just a skeleton with skin on and a gaping wound on his thigh, but the picture of health by the time we saw him. Jack was a delightful dog and he was the right dog at the right time. He enjoyed all the exercise I gave him and his thigh muscles were built up with all the swimming and uphill walking. However, I always felt he was somewhat uncoordinated and after we had had him for 18 months, he started losing control of his bowels. A visit to the Vet, who was sure he most likely had a brain tumour and he would only get worse. I had a new baby at the time, so made the toughest decision of my life to let him go before he lost his dignity. I could've persevered with him and made him sleep outside, to spare the carpet in the study (the dogs' bedroom), but that would've been too hard for him to understand - and what was I going to do with Chloe - I couldn't do one thing with one dog and not the other. Dear old Jack. I know we gave him the best 18 months (2 years, with Diane's previous care and love) of his life and he was such a gentle, loving boy in return. He was wonderful with the new baby - protective when he thought he needed to be, but never any sign of jealousy.
After Jack's crossing the Rainbow Bridge, we decided to keep to just having one dog. Chloe (now 12 3/4 yrs!) has always been fantastic with the cats and children...that was until Dudley's photo gripped my heart and the rest (and all I've just said) is already on this website back in January/February 2007!
I attended the German Shepherd Rescue Trust's 2005 Christmas party with two Boxers (felt very conspicuous!) and the 2006 one with Chloe, who even competed in the dress-up race and the oldest dog competition! Both years, I remember thinking to myself "I wonder if I'll ever be part of that Parade of Champions" as I watched them with tears in my eyes.
As Colleen said, Grace is meant to be with you, you lucky things - she's gorgeous - look at that smile on her face! She knows she's onto a good thing! Have a very Merry Christmas!... and who knows what GSD is around the next corner...perhaps.
Alison, Dudley #511 & Chloe
