At
Freedom Campers we are proud to include the majestic and proud Royal Albatross as part of our corporate logo.
We have chosen the albatross as our logo to represent its freedom of flight, this magnificent sea bird epitomises the endurance of our customers who travel vast distances to see some of the most wilderness country in the world.
The majestic and mysterious albatross, one of the largest seabirds in the world, has long been the subject of reverence and superstition. A solitary creature that regularly circumnavigates the globe, the albatross spends most of its life in flight or at sea, and is traditionally held to be the embodiment of a dead sea captain’s soul, condemned to wander the oceans for ever.
The largest of all the albatrosses is the royal albatross - a stunning sight, with an impressive wing span of up to 3.5 metres. They travel up to 190,000km a year, at speeds of 120kph and have a life expectancy of 45 years. The albatross mates for life, but male and female separate to fly in opposite directions around the world, returning to the same breeding grounds once every two years, and arriving within a couple of days of one another. The female lays one egg (weighing up to 500g) per breeding season, and the parents share incubation duty over a period of eleven weeks. Once the chick has hatched, the parents take turns at feeding it and guarding it against stoats, ferrets, wild cats and rats. Almost a year from the start of the breeding cycle, the fledging takes flight and the parents leave the colony and return to sea.
