One of Picton's oldest buildings is getting a new addition.

The ground floor of Oxley's Rock, on Wellington Street, is to be turned into a large cafe, restaurant and bar, with developer Geoff Morgan hoping to open before Christmas for the busy summer tourist season.

He did not divulge much about the premises' interior or theme, but said Oxley's Rock Cafe and Bar would allow up to 100 people to enjoy casual dining, with a menu full of local flavours.

"We are aiming for everybody really. That's our whole intention, to get that very good mix for locals and tourists."

Wildfire, an Auckland company that specialises in kitchen and bar design, coupled with a Christchurch architect, would ensure the establishment had a "very nice ambiance".

He expected construction to start on the premises, which will include a 20-person, sound-proof conference facility, next month once building consents are obtained.

"Just going with the experience I've had here in Picton, there's really no opportunity to have meetings here apart from going to a cafe where you're sitting at a table or renting a hotel room or apartment."

The building, originally known as the Pier Hotel, was built in the 1870s.

Its ornate facade was restored last year.
