The Gisborne District is one of the last areas in New Zealand to allow Freedom Camping.

Along part of our coastline and on the inland route to Wairoa you will find designated freedom camping areas - yours to enjoy - and all the Gisborne Council ask is that you follow some simple commonsense guidelines.

Currently beaches and other areas available for freedom camping include Pouawa Beach, Loisel's Beach, Tolaga Bay, Kaiaua Beach, Tokomaru Bay, Waipiro Bay and Donneraille Park.

Freedom camping is allowed at these designated spots from Labour weekend to Easter, except for Turihaua Beach where the season is limited to 26 December to 1 February.
