4. Evaluating Coffee (by Ian Bersten B.Com.Ecs Australian Roaster and coffee expert)

The flavour of wine is in every way comparable to that of coffee.
The main difference between them is that wine is served cold and coffee hot. One of the most important differences is that wine is poured from a bottle which, provided it has been well stored, has the same flavour all over the World at the same time. Coffee from the same origin has different flavours depending on the degree of roast, the dispersion of grind, the temperature of the water, the brew time, the quality of the water, the type of apparatus used, the ratio of water to coffee and how long, after preparation, it is served. A much more complex description is needed to determine just what a particular cup of coffee actually is.

5. Good News for Origin Coffee

Our research has shown that over 30% of our mail order customers come from word of mouth referrals. Your referrals are extremely important to us and to show our appreciation we will send you a 100gm pack of chocolate coated coffee beans for each referral. Just ask whoever you refer to us to mention your name when making their first order.

6. Latest from Malawi. By G.A.Sheppard Blantyre, Malawi

Together with Mocambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Malawi is facing an acute
maize shortfall, due mainly to inadequate and erractic rainfall during the
recent rainy season. This combined with widespread premature consumption of
the crop as 'green maize', to alleviate hunger in the rural areas where 85%
of the population live, means huge maize imports are required between
October and April 2003, to avoid serious famine.

The major donors led by UK, the EU and the USA have reacted well to the
crisis. A determined drive by the Government to clean-up corruption and
over-spending, has resulted in resumption of Aid-funding by the UK in
particular, and massive debt-relief by most of the EU led by Germany.
Disaster should be avoided. Meanwhile Malawi celebrates 38 years of
Independence on 6th July 2002, to include soccer internationals against
Zimbabwe and Zambia, and a State Visit by the President of Taiwan (another
significant donor nation).

On a brighter note the coffee crop has done well, although some farmers have struggled with the increase in fungal diseases due to the high humidity. We are looking forward to receiving another excellent quality new seasons crop towards the end of this year.

4. Fieldays:

This was a major disappointment for us this year. Applications etc were sent off as usual to get a letter back at the last minute saying Mystery Creek management had taken on a preferred coffee supplier for the Fieldays event and our services were no longer required! We tried everything we could to get in but were turned down.

I apologise to all you loyal customers who we meet every year at Fieldays. We have set things in motion to be represented on the Redvale stand, next to the aeroplane, for Fieldays 2003. We're keeping our fingers crossed.
