Family Categories PackYou may apply to come to New Zealand to live if you are sponsored by a family member who is already a New Zealand citizen and/or resident. You must be in one of the groups shown below.

  • Partner - you are the husband, wife, de facto or civil union partner of a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Dependent Child - you are a dependent child with a parent who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Parent - you have a child who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Brother, sister or adult child - you have a brother, sister or adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

If you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident you may be able to sponsor your partner, dependent child, parent, adult child, brother or sister.

Partnership Policy

If your partner is a New Zealand resident or citizen and you would like to live in New Zealand with them, then this is the category you should use for your application for New Zealand residency.

There are some minimum requirements for recognition of partnership and you and your partner will need to prove:

  • your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident, and is eligible to sponsor you
  • you and your partner have been living together in a genuine and stable relationship for 12 months or more
  • you meet the minimum requirements of a partnership
  • you and any dependent children included in your residence application all meet the health and character requirements

Parent Policy

New Zealand ImmigrationIf you are a parent and wish to move to New Zealand to be close to your child or children, you will need to apply for residence in New Zealand. Your child must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, and be eligible to sponsor you.

NZIS also states "that your sponsor must have been a New Zealand or Australian citizen and/or the holder of a Residence Permit or a Returning Resident’s Visa for at least three years immediately before the date your completed application is received by Immigration New Zealand".

You may be granted residence under this policy if you meet the following NZIS requirements:

  • you are the parent, or eligible grandparent/legal guardian of a New Zealand citizen or resident who is eligible to sponsor you.
  • you have no dependent children and all of your adult children are lawfully and permanently outside the country in which you are lawfully and permanently currently living in,
    OR
  • the 'centre of gravity' of your family is in New Zealand
  • you and any accompanying partner and dependent children included in your residence application all meet the health and character requirements.

Dependent Child(ren) Policy
If you are a child and wish to move to New Zealand to live with your parent(s), you will need to apply for residence in New Zealand. Your parent must be a New Zealand citizen or resident and be living in New Zealand.

You may be granted residence under this policy if:

  • you are 16 or younger and single
    OR
  • you are 17-24 and single with no children
    AND
  • you are totally or substantially reliant on an adult for financial support
  • your parent(s) are lawfully and permanently living in New Zealand
  • you were declared on your parent(s) residence application or were born or adopted later
  • you meet the health and character requirements.

Sibling/Adult Child Policy
If you are the brother, sister or adult child of a New Zealand resident and would like to join them in New Zealand, You may be granted residence under this policy if:

  • you are aged 55 years or younger and you have a sibling (brother or sister) or parent who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, and is eligible to sponsor you
  • Your parent(s) or siblings live in a different country from you
  • you, your partner and any dependent children included in your residence application all meet the health and character requirements
  • you have an acceptable offer of employment
  • if you have dependent children, you meet the minimum income requirement.
