Hurunui District New Zealand

Waikari and Hawarden are two charming rural townships at the end of the Historic Weka Pass Railway.

Centrally located, both towns offer panoramic views of the Puketeraki and Kaikoura ranges and are perfect locations for a relaxing getaway within easy driving distance of main tourist destinations and wineries.

Hurunui District New ZealandHawarden and Waikari are the gateway to the Hurunui Lakes, which is an excellent fishing and hunting area with plenty of walking tracks and camp areas. The spectacular lakes consist of Lake Sumner, Loch Katrine, Lake Sheppard, Lake Taylor and Lake Mason.

Waikari is renowned for Maori cave artwork and the Waikari Walkway provides access to the Maori rock drawings in the Weka Pass Reserve. The walkway enjoys panoramic views of the Puketeraki and Kaikoura ranges and passes through an area rich in natural beauty and history.

Visitors should always contact the Department of Conservation or a visitor information centre for additional information regarding access and weather conditions before travelling to the lakes.
