The Waikato River, south of Auckland, is
generally less rewarding for fisherman due to the waters invasion
of koi carp, introduced in the early 1980s to control water
weeds. Koi carp have since multiplied, threatening the
rivers original species.
Lake Rotorangi is a new lake which rarely appears on maps. The
lake came into existence in 1987 behind a hydro-electric dam on
the Patea River in the Taranaki outback. The lake provides
excellent sources of both rainbow and brown trout. Houseboats can
be rented on the lake and camping facilities are located nearby.
