the north east
Expanding across the least populated region
of the North Island are the splendid trout fishing rivers and
lakes of Urewera National Park. The most renowned however are the
waters of Lake Waikaremoana. The park headquarters are located at
the eastern end of the lake and provide ample facilities.
The Ruakituri River, flowing east from Urewera National Park, is
most favoured by fishermen, who are aware of its location. A
small road follows the Ruakituri River upstream to the Wairoa
River at Te Reinga, home to marae accommodation. The Maori
village provides beds, showers and flush toilets; bed linen may
be rented and kitchen facilities are available, however your own
food is required. It is important that you telephone prior to
arrival.
Hawkes Bay and Napier also provide good fishing spots, depending
on the time of year. Consult the visitor information centres in
these locations.
