Glenmac Farmstay New ZealandOamaru is the ‘capital’ of the Waitaki District, however the Waitaki Valley is not only home to Kurow, but to some other fabulous rural townships that link visitors to Ohau, Mt Cook/Aoraki and other exciting routes. Each township features some wonderful attractions and delightful scenery, from vineyards to huge azure blue lakes to pretty coastal views, it is all seen here.

Oamaru is a great place to plan to visit for a day if you are staying in the Waitaki Valley area. The compact town centre is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island and is only 60km’s from Kurow. There are plenty of fabulous cafes to enjoy, historic buildings to please the eye and Oamau is home to the world famous eco tourism attraction – the Blue Pegnuin Colony.

Duntroon is a quaint village which has managed to preserve some of its unique past due to a restored gaol and blacksmith’s forge. The Vanished World Centre is also located in Duntroon, and close by is two good sites to view early Maori rock drawings.

Kurow is the ‘gateway to the high country’ and is located in the heart of the Waitaki Valley. Thanks to a lovely summer climate, year round lake fishing, awesome lakes, fabulous river fishing and a huge array of nature walks, this is a popular holiday spot for New Zealand families and tourists.

Hakataramea township is home to the impressive Hakataramea Valley and the Hakataramea River, which is well known with locals and visitors alike for its Brown Trout flyfishing plus swimming and top picnic spots.

Otematata boasts its own micro-climate which has resulted in the town growing into a popular holiday village for those that enjoy lovely weather! Water-sports such as swimming, boating and fishing are popular here, along with walking, cycling and trips to the various hydro dams. Golfers will enjoy the rural nine-hole golf course!

Omarama is ‘world famous’ for its ideal gliding climate thanks to the warm Nor Westerlies created in the area and if you have the time, you can enjoy the magic of a glider flight with an experienced pilot. The township is located at the crossroads between Central Otago and the Waitaki Valley. Once again this is a popular holiday destination for Brown and Rainbow trout fishing enthusiasts. A good selection of stores, food and accommodation can all be found here.

Twizel is only five minutes from Lake Ruataniwha, which is a terrific recreation area for water sport enthusiasts while nearby Ohau skifield is a big winter attraction. Twizel is a nice place to enjoy the great outdoors, including walks, fishing, ski-ing, visiting Salmon Farms or learning more about the endangered Black Stilt colony.
