How
can you resist New Zealands highest altitude bungy jump?
If you not getting enough excitement and challenge on the slopes
of Mt Hutt Ski Field, you can throw yourself off a 40 metre-high
platform at an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level.
Mt Hutt Bungy is a cantilevered platform built on Kea Rock high
above the township of Methven, inland from Christchurch. The
thrill factor is enhanced by the ability to dive, ski or ride off
the spectacular rock, detach yourself from the body harness and
then ski or snowboard down the slopes to the triple chairlift.
This unique ski field bungy was the brainchild of two local
skiers who saw the potential in the precipitous Kea Rock by the
Mt Hutt Ski Field car park. The platform is attached to a 30
tonne counterweight and the jump area juts out 19.5 metres from
the rock face. So you can do a regular bungy jump over the snow,
or do the jump and then ski or ride off down the mountain. To
cope with heavy snowfalls the platform is in the form of a large
metal grate that snow can fall through. So stepping out on the
grate is like walking on air 40 metres above the ground.
Mt Hutt Ski Field is one of the best in New
Zealand, enjoying a long, consistent season and having superb
views over the Canterbury Plains. The bungy is open during the
winter months, usually between June and October. Bookings are
necessary when the ski field is busy. Jumpers can receive a full
photo service and purchase souvenirs to remember their
experience.
So when you next visit Mt Hutt drop off the rock on a sweet
vertical fall-line and do a perfect powder touchdown on the
slopes.
Talk about options - this has to be the most unique use of the
bungy.
