From Perth, the eastern highway takes you into the vast desert expanse of the Nullarbor Plain, where the fascinating Kalgoorlie goldfields still yield precious metals to avid fossickers. Take the highway south to explore the delights of the Margaret River region – majestic karri and jarrah forests, underground caverns and surfing beaches. Further on is the picturesque port of Albany and magnificent national parks along the coast to Esperance.
The northern coastal highway opens up a whole world of new experiences. The vast fields of wildflowers in spring will surprise you, as will the bewildering landforms of Wave Rock and the Pinnacles Desert. The World Heritage ecotourism gem, Shark Bay, is home to sharks, dugongs and turtles. Friendly dolphins love to frolic at Monkey Mia, and giant whale sharks can be seen playing at Ningaloo Reef.
The premier adventure in this big state is the far north wilderness of the Kimberley Region, regarded as Australia’s last frontier. This area has huge cattle stations, spectacular gorges and fascinating Aboriginal culture, plus surreal beehive domes called the Bungle Bungles, which defy logic. Broome is the southern gateway to the Kimberley. Here you can see the finest sea pearls in the world.
